The Correct Way to Pot Succulents
If you know what to do, potting succulents is easy. Here’s what you need to know.
Succulents are popular little plants that are easy to care for and complement any decor. They’re great for avid gardeners who can’t wait out the winter. However, they do need special care during the potting process to help them thrive.
All you’ll need is your favorite succulent, a planting medium consisting of half potting mix and half perlite (you can buy this mix or mix it yourself), and a pot that is slightly larger than your plant that doesn’t have drain holes. Why no holes? Because you want to mimic a drought/flood cycle, so the water should stay in the bottom of the pot.
2. Perlite First
Even though you want to mimic a flood/drought cycle, you also want to avoid root rot. Therefore, you will need to put 1 or 2 handfuls of plain perlite in the bottom before adding your planting medium.
